I experienced a good example of this inattention when I told a lunch-table’s worth of White colleagues at the Center for Advanced Studies in the Behavioral Sciences about the linguist John Baugh’s project on “linguistic profiling” (Baugh 2003). Baugh has developed a matched-guise test in which a single speaker uses a “White professional,” a “Latino,” or a “Black” voice in making telephone inquiries about the availability of advertised rentals in the San Francisco Bay area. The “White professional” voice is much more likely to yield an invitation to make an appointment to look at the property, while the other accents are more likely to result in a response that the rental is no longer available. My colleagues, all sophisticated scholars, were genuinely surprised at this result; several mentioned that they had thought that this sort of discrimination had long since disappeared.”

This is like when me and my white soon-to-be husband were looking for places. I’d call up and they’d say, “Come on down! Get an application!”. Because I don’t “sound” black.

Then I’d walk in 2 minutes later and they’d be all, “Oh. Sorry, we just rented it.”

Then I’d send him in and he’d get an application.

The best part? Walking back in while he was completing the application. “Oh, they gave you an application? But they told me it was just rented. ODD. THAT. I’m going to report them so let’s just skip this place, m’kay?” The looks on their faces and the pathetic apologies were just too much fun.

Used to deal with the same thing with road trips. Hotels would tell me that there were no vacancies, but my white roommate would go in and get us a room, usually cheaper than advertised.

I’m going to reblog this every time I see it on my dash. My parents pointed out how this phenomenon worked when we were moving to PA (they’d get steered to crummier neighborhoods and have to insist on being shown others). Housing discrimination is still pretty widespread and the gatekeepers? Tend to either intentionally or due to unchecked bias reinforce the status quo.

It always floors me the things people are surprised at. Meanwhile, every person of color is sitting here like, “Oh. Must be another day that ends in Y, and in other news, water is wet.” Like, really, people are surprised by this, and whenever they show surprise at learning stuff that we go through, I have to poker face, lest I end up giving them the most disbelieving side eye in history because how do you NOT know this? Sort of had this issue with an acquaintance of my boss. The application was approved and all systems were go until the potential tenant (a Black person) faxed in a copy of their picture ID. Suddenly, the landlord didn’t want to rent the home out anymore. A real estate agent on behalf of the client threatened to pursue legal action and the acquaintance asked us for advice.

I read the email and was like, “pbbft, your landlord fucked himself over. what do you want us to say? have fun getting sued, you should’ve known better.”

when my dad was studying in London, he changed his accent from an “Indian” one to a ~classy~ English one. His friend, who was a white Londoner, had a decidedly ~non-classy~ accent. One day my dad’s white friend called for a hotel somewhere and they were “out of rooms” (because accent), but when my dad called later, they had “plenty of rooms” (because accent). THEN they showed up at the place, and everyone assumed the white guy was the ~classy~ guy, until they opened their mouths. and then. lol and then.

That’s a whole nother realm of unrealistic expectations :/

Plus, it tells me on the other side how controlling the mother is because you have to raise someone to be a mama’s boy. They ain’t born that way.

And they can’t do a DAMN THING without running it by their mothers first. And that causes a lot of problems when you’re in a relationship because if the mom doesn’t like you for some petty reason then ole boy ain’t gonna make his own judgement call and just listen to mom right off the bat. In some cases that can save one from disaster but I’ve never seen a case in which it was true.

Honestly, I always ask my parents for advice for huge decisions, you know, to gain some wisdom. But mama’s boys be on a whole ‘nother level of always having they mama in EVERYTHING.

And mama ain’t gonna like you on GP cuz you’re taking some of her boy’s attention away from her unless she thinks she can run you too.

This always comes up with discussing problems. When it deals with a Black individual, group, institution, and everything inbetween; any and every single problem that emerges in one is then applied to all Black people and things as a whole. There is never any problem that’s unique to one. It’s something endemic of the entire race. Even ones who do not have these problems have them heaped into the psychological analysis of them. Whereas a white individual, group, institution, and everything inbetween; and all of its problems are treated as individual and unique to just them and should be addressed and treated as such.

This makes it damn near impossible to discuss Black anything because it’s so broad and wide ranging that it makes it impossible to discuss anything with any sort of nuance. And that further makes it impossible to even conceive of any sort of solution for anything because when things are this broad and wide ranging it will eventually come into contradiction with something. This great inability to understand Blackness as an individual, social, and historical manifestation keeps us stuck in the mud.

Characterizing Middle of Nowhere and similar films as “different” and “revolutionary” for their depiction of fleshed-out black female characters is problematic. Why is it “different” to show black women in a realist setting that doesn’t involve servitude, violence, or exaggerated notions of poverty? What is different about a black woman being a nurse, a lesbian, a wife distraught that her husband is cheating, a bearer of lineage and history? There’s nothing inherently revolutionary about these portrayals, but when considered within a limited scope that seems to accept black women only in heavily stigmatized spaces of representation, films like Middle of Nowhere and Pariah seem almost foreign. Films written from inside the complex space of black womanhood are seen as “other,” while those created from outside its boundaries are celebrated. In the same interview with bell hooks, Dash states of her film, “It is a foreign film because, as I’ve been saying, it’s a film that privileges black women first…. The feelings that evokes about African Americans are foreign, because what audiences have seen over the years has been very simplistic. Things that appeal to baser instincts. And now we have a film that is both complicated and complete, with a lot of different meanings.” Twenty years later, the treatment of these films as “foreign” has in many ways remained the same.

Though many downplay the importance of Academy recognition, these awards do set prestigious standards for the films they honor. Oscar nominees see their careers enhanced in both scale and popularity, as in the case of director Benh Zeitlin and writer Lucy Alibar, whose audacious debut, Beasts of the Southern Wild, solidified their skills and led to an increased interest in their upcoming work. But unlike Beasts of the Southern Wild, which was distributed by Fox Searchlight, many independent films lack the means to reach the entire voting body of the Academy, a challenge that Middle of Nowhere encountered. “It was lovely that people thought that [Middle of Nowhere] was good enough to be nominated, and the press started to carry that story,” DuVernay told Bitch. “But ultimately, having been a publicist, and being the distributor of the film as well, I know what it takes to get nominated—money and exposure. There is a systemic barrier for any independent film without money to be considered, no matter what the merits of your screenplay are. Beyond that, there is the issue of the story and where the story came from. This is a story that uses the black body and is about black women, and came from the perspective of a black woman that is not easily digestible to the demographic of the Academy.”
